Rome's Ara Pacis found. After eleven years of work and especially sharp controversy has concluded the restorations of the Ara Pacis. Finally, on April 21, an important date in Rome, it is as if it was Christmas! The altar was reopened to the public with the new flag of Richard Meier opened by Mayor Walter Veltroni. Let's travel history of this monument whose name literally means Ara Pacis, Altar of Peace. It was to be the symbol of peace and prosperity, the result of the expedition peace Augustus, Spain and in the southern provinces of Gaul in the year 13 ac. The Senate of Rome had decided to celebrate the victorious return of Augustus of the western provinces through the execution of an altar. It took three and a half years to complete the construction of the huge work. The Ara consisted of a rectangular fence inside which was the true altar. The decoration rich and complex in bas-relief represents one of the masterpieces of this classical sculpture. The Ara Pacis was on the Champ de Mars, emblematic place in Rome. During the second century BC, works of urbanization were carried out on the Champ de Mars, which caused progressive burial of Ara Pacis. It took almost four centuries to brin back the monument to light and return it to Rome. The work was difficult to achieve, the Ara Pacis located in more than seven meters below the road facilities and a water table. When, in 1937, the Minister for National Education that is mandated to rebuild the Ara Pacis, found a problem with the new location of the monument, at the end, the choice fell on an area near the Mausoleum of Augustus whose excavations were just completed. The idea was to build a centre in memory of Augustus.
